A New Perspective
Brand New Perspective
The voice on the other end of the phone
was quietly saying the words, "We need you to come down here. There's
been an accident."
As I neared the scene of the accident, I began recognizing fragments
of our truck strewn about the highway. For just a moment, time stood
still, as an overwhelming fear crept into my heart. Dear God...
where is my family?
Then I saw him... hurt and dazed but standing. He was doing what
he does best and what comes natural to him... taking control of
the uncontrollable... directing traffic as he began putting life
back into the order it belonged. In that moment I knew, without
question, that our daughter was already out of harm's way. I knew
he wouldn't allow it to be any other way.
I stared at the truck in utter disbelief. How could anyone have
possibly walked away from that tangled mess of steel and glass?
The voice behind me was reassuring me that Haley was safe. They
told me the story of him prying open her door with the power of
pure adrenaline and of him pulling her from the truck to safety.
I quietly knew that is wasn't the power of adrenaline that had pulled
her from the wreckage. It was the power of a father's love.
As quickly as order began to be restored to the scene, chaos
again prevailed. As I stood watching him still directing traffic,
I could hear the screams and the squeal of tires but I knew not
from where they came. In slow motion I watched the speeding vehicle's
brakes lock up as it careened out of control to where he stood.
The smoke of burning tires clouding my view, but still I watched.
Dear God... where is he?
Time ceased to exist as I silently watched this terror unfold
directly in front of me, but still I could not move. At the moment
of impact, steel meeting steel at 75 miles per hour, I did not flinch
or even speak. I did not hear the crash. This can't be happening.
This isn't real. Dear God... please explain this to me. I continued
to stand and watch, unable to function or even understand.
Please God... let me wake up.
Then he was there... leading our daughter into the waiting ambulance,
and again I could breathe.
As I entered the emergency room and saw them together, I witnessed
the bond that can never be destroyed... the bond of a man and his
daughter.
The outpouring of a community coming together as one was overwhelming.
I watched the officer speaking with our daughter and witnessed his
tears as she explained to him from a child's view. "I thought I
lost my Daddy"
The officer began to explain how God had smiled down on our little
family and how mere moments would have brought a tragically different
ending. He told me never to waste a single moment.
We live our lives believing we have tomorrow and never saying
the things that must be said today.
