Color concepts in web design - Do your choices in color really have anything to do with the success of your site?

No matter how good or bad the design is on a business website, the final determining factor of success is if the product or service sells.

Color Concepts In Web Design - Graphic Image If what you’re currently doing works, STOP! Don’t change a thing! Don’t read another word! Keep doing what works for you!

The front page of your site is much like the cover of a book. Can we really judge a book by its cover? Of course we can’t! But, do we? OF COURSE WE DO!

It doesn’t matter if there’s a Nobel Peace Prize winning bestseller novel sitting inside the pages if the public doesn’t open the book. What is it, that makes us choose to open the cover to take a further look?

What makes the people choose to buy, or choose not to buy from a site?

A big part of what makes us want to stay a little longer and perhaps make a purchase relates to the concept of color in web design.

Without any thought on our part, we associate color with feeling. Some colors may bring feelings of peace and security while others may make us feel anxious.

We come to expect our surroundings to have a specific appearance. People become uncomfortable when things are different than they expect them to be. When we become uncomfortable we begin to doubt or lose trust.

One example of the concept of color can be found in professional fields. Enter the front door of most any attorney’s office or a financial institution and the color schemes will always invoke feelings of professionalism. Imagine entering a professional office and seeing the walls painted in solid black. Would you be comfortable signing a contract on red paper with white printing?

The concept of color is not a perfect science. What may be perfect in one situation, might be totally wrong in another. In order to reach a decision on which colors are best for a particular site, you need to understand the answers to a few questions.

Who are the targeted customers?

  • What age group?
  • Male or Female?
  • Executives or blue collar workers?

Is tradition or culture a factor in your business?

  • Will there be a different perception of the product or service your company provides in different areas of the country?

There is no single color that can give the feeling of trust. We incorporate colors on a website to invoke a response from the viewers to enjoy their stay and desire to return. (Like that feeling of a good book that is hard to put down)

Colors represent different meanings to people: power, peace, purity, romance, depression, etc. Mixing colors often invoke totally different responses and hopefully creates a balance of trust that is needed.

Spend time researching color concepts, and how they relate to your specific business. Make informed decisions when designing your site and look for ideas from others.

Incredible color coordinating concepts will not, by itself make your site a success, but it may encourage the public to look a little deeper into your site. The longer a visitor stays on your site, the higher the chance you'll earn a sale!
