Does Content Play a Role in SEO?

J. Walker Author of Content SEO

One of the biggest transformations seen in search engine results over the last couple years is a notable preference for pages with content in the 1,000 word range. If you are serious about developing pages that will rank in the top 10 results, then it is vital to begin increasing your content.

Web pages resembling either magazine ads or brochures (with limited content), are often ineffective, both for SEO and for marketing as well. Creating quality content has become even more essential than ever.

"The first major difference that jumps out in the Yahoo results is the preference Yahoo's algorithm seems to have for more words on a page. The average number of words on a page for Google was 943 while Yahoo's average words per page in the top 10 was 1305."  GoRank.com

Unless you are willing to invest heavily into paid advertising programs, this really leaves only two solutions. You can choose to hire a professional copywriter to develop powerful copy for your website, or you can learn effective techniques to do this yourself.

Essentially, writing for the web involves learning to develop excellent marketing content, while blending in the fundamentals of SEO techniques. I promise you this, the more you do it, the better you will get. It seems that to excel in writing, we have to actually write, and write, and write! The more practice we get, the stronger our skills become.

Building Content While Implementing SEO Techniques

Search engines will return search results in the exact order of their perceived relevancy to the search phrase requested. The more relevant your site appears to be, to the search requested, the HIGHER your listing will appear in the results. This process involves far more than simply repeating a key phrase several times.

"Hypertext-Matching Analysis: Google's search engine also analyzes page content. However, instead of simply scanning for page-based text (which can be manipulated by site publishers through meta-tags), Google's technology analyzes the full content of a page and factors in fonts, subdivisions and the precise location of each word. Google also analyzes the content of neighboring web pages to ensure the results returned are the most relevant to a user's query". http://www.google.com/corporate/tech.html

Within the content of a page, make sure that the title and H1 heading tag use the identical key phrase. However, the H2 heading tags only need to include the main parts of your selected key phrase. It is also important to use this identical key phrase in the beginning, middle and end of your content. Pages with high word count may require additional usage of this phrase throughout the document to build a relevant keyword density. In keeping with the themes or relevancy concept that search engines are focusing on, you will want to break your key phrase up a few places, in ADDITION to the methods mentioned above.

If my key phrase is "Collectible Red Widgets", I will sometimes use EACH of those words independent of the others, within my content. For example, sometimes I will use the word widgets, but not necessarily collectible red widgets. Or, perhaps collectible widgets, but not necessarily collectible red widgets. With search engines beginning to use keyword "stemming", I may also blend in some variations of the key phrase and individual keywords throughout the document.

"The ability for a search to include the "stem" of words. For example, stemming allows a user to enter the term swimming and get back results also for the stem word swim." searchenginewatch.com/facts/glossary.html

SEO methods are specifically designed to increase traffic to your website. Marketing techniques are designed to keep that traffic on your website, and encourage visitors to make a purchase. Your challenge is to find the delicate balance between them.

I WILL DEFINITELY SEE YOU AT THE TOP!
