Disable the Default Nofollow Attribute in WordPress Tutorial by J. Walker of GNC Web Creations

Disable the Default Nofollow Attribute in WordPress

Basic Step by Step Instructions to Disable the Nofollow Attribute

When WordPress decided to apply the nofollow attribute to all comments by default, I was disappointed. I appreciate that they made the decision as a means to help prevent comment spam. However, with so many alternatives available, it makes no sense to punish the legitimate site owners who leave comments on my blogs.

Many people new to blogging may have never heard of this attribute so they are unlikely to search for plugins to disable the default nofollow attribute in WordPress. This means the decision to use the nofollow attribute on all comments was already made for them before they even knew that a decision needed to be made.

I would have liked to have seen this as an option in the admin panel, along with a link to more information, allowing bloggers to make their own decision. Thankfully a plugin exists, making it a simple matter to disable the default nofollow attribute in WordPress.

STEP 1 - Download the Plugin

Download the DoFollow Plugin to your desktop or where you can easily find it.

STEP 2 - Upload the Plugin

Upload dofollow plugin

Using an FTP program, upload the dofollow.php file to the plugins folder within the wp-content folder on your server.  wp-content > plugins

STEP 3 - Activate the DoFollow Plugin

From the admin panel (dashboard) of your blog, click on plugins.
