Increase Targeted Website Traffic
by J. Walker of GNC Web Creations

The easiest way that I have found to increase targeted website
traffic is to focus each page of my website on a specific niche
in the market. This really all begins with each page title I select.
Imagine for a moment here that my business involves country style
decorations for the home. I am currently working on optimizing a
page which includes various wall decorations.
My first thought is to work from the key phrase wall decorations.
In this scenario though, the phrase wall decorations is a
very general category, rather than a specific niche. It can cover
a wide spectrum of themes that have nothing to do with the products
I am marketing on this page. Remember that we are not just looking
to increase our website traffic.
We are looking to increase TARGETED website traffic.
The quickest route to increase sales to this page is to increase
the traffic from people who look specifically for what I sell. This
means my page needs a very specific focus.
To choose a title for this page, I must first consider who my target
audience is.
- What type of person is looking for the products I sell?
- What do these people have in common?
- What type of home are they likely to be decorating?
- What phrase would they use to search for the products I sell?
Now let's back up for a moment . . .
One of the best ways to find online financial success is to find
something that you love to do, something you are absolutely passionate
about, and then find a way to make a living doing it. If you are
fortunate enough to have chosen this route, you already have an
excellent feel for your target audience. You likely have a good
idea what phrases your target audience would look for because you
know this topic like the back of your hand. In this case, your primary
challenge is only to make sure you do not get hung up on "buzz phrases"
that people in the industry use, rather than those people actually
shopping for your product.
What if I got into this specific business accidentally though?
Although I sell country style decorations, perhaps I decorate
my home in more of a modern contemporary style. This simply means
I am going to have to spend even more time studying my target audience
to discover what their wants and needs are.
In this case I would likely head to the library and start looking
at every magazine related to this topic to give me a very strong
feel for my target audience. I may also visit websites that focus
on these themes to get additional thoughts to work from. Once I
know all this, it is easier to begin to choose specific niches to
select titles for my pages.
This is a very important part of the optimization process because
it does not matter which phrase you and I would use to search for
this product. It only matters which phrase our target audience would
use to find these products.
In the scenario described in this article, I may have discovered
a few things during my research. I likely found that the term country
style means different things to different target audiences. For
some people, this means the cutesy country style, such as ducks
or roosters in a kitchen. For others, this may mean more of a Southwest
theme, along the lines of Aztec Indians decor. There are also those
people who see country decor strictly in terms of a country western
theme, such as cowboys and Indians. Finally, there are those of
us who see the term country to mean more of a rustic theme, such
as the decor found in a log cabin.
DO NOT ALLOW ALL THESE CHOICES TO OVERWHELM YOU!
The key to success here is NOT to figure out which of these themes
you can force your products to fit into, but rather which theme
the products in question fit into most naturally. Remember that
we are ONLY discussing the products on this one page.
Every page on your site needs a specific theme (niche). If the
products on the page you are looking at are too wide a range to
select some sort of theme, you likely are in a situation where the
products need to be broken down into categories.
Another thing I may have discovered during my research is that I
may be using a term that is not often used. For example, I may be
saying decorations, but find out that my target audience
uses the term decor.
When I put everything I learned together, I may have decided that
I sell wall decorations that are more in the line with a rustic
theme than anything else.
Now, how do I go about selecting a title, based on what I
have found?
At this point I begin using the keyword tools to find a phrase that
will work well with the information I have collected. I would likely
begin researching the following terms:
- Rustic Decor
- Rustic Country
- Rustic Wall Decor
- Rustic Country Decor
As I worked through each of these phrases, I promise you that
I would love the phrase Rustic Country Decor, but it is very
unlikely that I would use it for this scenario. Why? Because my
page is much more specific. My page markets rustic wall decor, not
just general rustic decor. In fact, I would likely select the phrase
Rustic Wall Decor.
Does this mean I totally ignore the phrase Rustic Country Decor
and that I will not be using it? Not at all! Although I will not
be using it for this specific page, it would be a wonderful title
for another page on my site that displays a variety of decor, rather
than just wall decor. If my entire business surrounds Rustic
Country Decor in one way or another, it may even end up being
the title of my home page.
HOWEVER, for right now I am only focused on this specific
page, so I will simply jot this phrase down on a running list of
ideas that I come across as I am working.
When you use this method to select your page titles, it will surprise
you how often you end up somewhere entirely different from where
you started. If the result is a title that fits naturally with the
primary topic (niche) of the page, you will know you have selected
a good starting point from which you can increase targeted website
traffic.
