Benefits of Using the Title Attribute
Using the Title Attribute from a Marketing Standpoint

One of the most important benefits of using the title attribute is being able to give our visitors
additional information about the destination of a link that we have given them. Most browsers will
display the text used within the title attribute as a
tooltip when the cursor hovers over the linked text.
Our visitors really don't like to be surprised, or have to guess where a link
will take them. They want to know what to expect. By giving them additional
information about the link, they feel confident about clicking on it.
Many screen readers used by our sight impaired visitors are configured to read
the text within title attributes. This can go a very long way toward improving the
usability of our websites, while at the same time adding to our
credibility.
All of these things begin to add up in the process of developing a successful
site. The more usable and credible we can make our websites, the longer people
are likely to stay. The longer they stay, the more likely they are to place an
order.

Using the Title Attribute from a Marketing Standpoint
Since title attributes are designed to be used specifically as a benefit to our
visitors, how can it possibly have anything to do with successful website
marketing? See, I don't see excellent sales techniques as a way to convince my
visitors to place an order, but rather as a means of helping them convince
themselves.
Do you believe that your product or service provides a benefit to those who go ahead and make the decision to do business with you? Wouldn't it make
sense to help make the decision and order process as easy as possible for
them then? This all starts long before the actual sale process reaches that
point.
Hopefully, you have already begun to learn that writing articles from the
viewpoint of your visitors can drive a huge amount of targeted traffic
to your site. Within these articles you should be taking full advantage of the
title attribute for links.
As an example, let's say that you own a few vacation rentals, right on the lake.
Certainly you would want to provide a page listing all of the wonderful things
to do in that area. Wouldn't you also want to include words and pictures that
would help them imagine watching the gorgeous sunset over the water, right from
the deck of their secluded cabin at the end of the day?
Of course you should consider linking the correlating text (and images) to a
page giving more information about your secluded lake cabins. Used correctly,
the text you select for the title attribute can help encourage your visitors to
click the link, ready and eager to find out more information about your cabins.
Throughout the process, it should be easy for your visitors to find a link to
make their reservations. Again, choose text that will make it easy to go ahead
and make their decision right now. The title attribute for the reservations link
might say something like, reserve your dream getaway vacation at one of our
secluded lake cabins!
Is this starting to make sense? Can you see how this could be used for any
product or service? You may have to get those creative juices flowing, but it
can be done!

simply right click on this page and select view source. You will find code for
the title attribute used in two different ways, both alone and combined with the
alt attribute.
Title Attribute Combined with the Alt Attribute
When an image on your website is linked to another destination, you can use the title attribute
in addition to the alt attribute. When both attributes are used, Internet Explorer
will display the the text used for the alt attribute. Firefox will display the
title attribute.
Keep in mind that title attribute gives additional information about the
actual page the link is directed to. However, the alt attribute provides only
brief alternative text regarding the image. In most cases the text will vary.
